AFIP: Agroforestry Improvement Partnership



Vision and Goal

A sustainable national development and distribution system of quality planting materials for agroforestry species contributes to improve economic opportunities of the rural poor.

Objectives

The research Institutions develop demand-driven and pro-poor improved quality planting materials (QPM) of fruit, timber and other associated species as well as their management technologies.

A national QPM distribution system is established for fruit trees, timber trees and associated species which benefits the poor.

Intervention area

Main activities

Establishment of a QPM distribution chain involving national research, extension agencies and private sectors, which benefits the poor
Improvement of processes and facilities for plant introduction, variety development, germplasm conservation and multiplication as well as material development and sharing these technologies at the research institutions
Support for establishment and approval of a national nursery act or guideline
Promotion of Nursery Associations at district level and their national federation
Strengthening the competitiveness of the nursery value chain


Main Achievements (December 2008)

A national distribution system for QPM of fruit and timber trees has been adopted by the stakeholders. 4 breeder level, 55 Foundation level and 300 local level mother tree orchards (MTO) have been established in different parts of the country
7,000 nursery owners throughout 50 districts have formed associations called Upazila Nursery Malik Samity (UNMS) and their skills in QPM production have been improved
33 district level federations now support further capacity development of the UNMSs
BARI and BAU conserved so far 114 species and developed 32 varieties of 12 species. 37 varieties of 18 species were introduced in the farmer field schools through the network of nursery owners
Budget

USD 2,71 million (2004 - 2010)
BFRI has strengthened its quality seed production program and established 77 hectares of timber tree seed orchards and 200 trial plantations of rattan (cane) while IFESCU planted 540 rattan of 11 species as variety trial

A nursery act is drafted and revised as per the comments from the inter-ministerial meeting and is awaiting for approval and execution
