Horticulture and Agroforestry

A specific process was developed for improving knowledge and skills regarding production of vegetables, fruit trees and timber trees as well as livestock rearing by small and marginal farmers, for better management of the homestead and land resources.

The process consists of 4 main steps: 1) diagnosis of problems and opportunities based on the livelihoods approach; 2) planning of activities; 3) identification of service providers from resource farmers; and 4) learning by doing.

CBOs are the main target group at the beginning, opening to all the community. The operational concept was designed based on farmers' field school and participatory innovation development (PID) approaches. Under this process, Intercooperation promotes the

linkages with all national organisations and line agencies involved in vegetables, fruit trees and timber trees, as well as the private sector, providing support and expertise. It was revealed that this year, more than 78,000 farmers solved 136 types of problems regarding vegetable and fruit tree planting and management. These trained farmers could increase production and income from vegetables and fruits by 25% through improved management.

It is important to mention here that Intercooperation developed a substantial amount of training materials for the farmers, in collaboration with several research and extension institutions and development partners, including: BARI , BARC, BAU, BCSIR, BFRI, IFESCU, DAE, AIS of DAE, BLRI, DLS, PROSHIKA, BRAC, Upazilla and District Nursery Owners Associations.

More than 50 technical training modules (2 to 15 days) have been developed for the service providers, and more than 200 for the farmers. These cover various domains of agroforestry: fruit and timber tree, vegetable, field crop, bamboo, domestic livestock (cattle & poultry) etc.

Some significant modules developed

Homestead vegetable production care and improved management (ten modules)
Insect and disease control and management (ten modules)
