Promotion of Professional Nursery Organisations

One of the most important achievements of Intercooperation's activities in Bangladesh remains the promotion of commercially run nurseries and their professional associations. With adequate support in the field of human and institutional development, these associations, formed initially at Upazila level, have developed secondary organisations at the district level. They are now independently promoting new Upazila associations on their own initiative. The movement has developed in other regions, under Intercooperation partnerships with BRAC and Proshika. The nursery associations play a vital role in the production and distribution of quality planting materials.

Main assets/results:

A network of 6,000 professional nurseries, grouped into 260 Upazila associations in 45 districts, with district unions established in 24 districts
Production of 90 millions saplings annually

Promoting of quality planting materials through the management of 180 mother tree orchards of fruit trees and over 200 plus trees of timber species

Modules/Methodology developed

Quality audit of nurseries and process for awarding a seal (Neem Logo) and certificate to quality nurseries
Modules for management of nurseries
Audio visual material on quality promotion and improved nursery management practices
Market information system for the members of nursery associations
