SAAKTI: Sustainable Access to Agroforestry Knowledge, Technology and Information



Vision and Goal Vision at a Glance:

Economic empowerment of rural households, with special attention to poor and extreme poor, through improved access to quality and sustainable service provision at local level.


Approaches

Three-tier approach for promoting local service providers (national-regional-local)
Promotion of coordinated platforms at local, regional and national level
Promotion of service providers' networks and associations
Process facilitation to strengthen the backstopping mechanism for the demand-led services
Commercial service provision and Business Development Services to ensure service sustainability at local level

Promotion of public-private partnership for sustaining project's interventions

Objectives

Quality local service providers contribute to economic development of communities.
Regional resource pools, including public and private sector, strengthen the capacities of local service providers.

National Agroforestry Working Group contributes to disseminate knowledge in agroforestry.

Intervention area

Main activities

Capacity building of professional local service providers (LSPs)
Development and strengthening of regional resource pool for backstopping LSPs
Promotion of service providers networks and associations

Production of client appropriate extension materials by research institutions and extension agencies

Achievements (December 2008)

Functional collaboration established with 11 national R&D organisations who are motivated and becoming more responsive to the agroforestry needs of farmers
Functional collaboration established with 15 national and regional private sector organisations that are providing quality inputs and capacity building support to the Local Service Providers/Retailers, and purchasing produces from the producers.
Over 3'700 local service providers (LSPs) are helping in rural communities with; field crop, vegetables, fruit tree mgt., livestock, fisheries, bamboo mgt., agro processing, tailoring, etc.
51 local service providers associations established
8 Regional Resource Pools of experts have been established to backstop LSPs



Farmers are getting better livelihood opportunities using client specific information from R&D organisations
